new to cornerstone church?

The church was founded in 2001 with a simple goal: to know Jesus, and make Jesus known. Things started small in a home but grew as God added students and young adults, professionals, married couples and families across the City of Newcastle. In 2012 God led Mike and Esole Duff to Newcastle with their kids from South Africa. The lead-elder role was passed to Mike in June 2012. With the help of people committed to seeing the vision fulfilled, the church has experience significant growth.

What to expect?

On Sunday you can expect to meet a friendly bunch of people doing their best to live out their faith. Our meetings are welcoming and informal - so dress in whatever makes you feel comfortable. Before the service starts we grab a cup of coffee and catch up with friends.

Then a small band of musicians lead us in worship that's typically 3-4 songs with a mix of old and news songs. The Sunday Sermon goes through books of the Bible and we explore its application to our everyday lives. At the end of the service we grab another coffee and catch up with friends again before saying goodbye.

As we read in the New Testament we see that churches are led by a team of elders, also known as pastors, shepherds or overseers. They are words used to describe the same person. The people are qualified men according to scripture (1 Timothy 3:1-7 & Titus 1:5-10). Although elders or pastors are the highest human authority in the local church, they are ultimately following Jesus, the chief-shepherd and ultimate Head of the church. They will give an account to Him for their stewardship.

  • Mike & esole duff

Michael is married to Esolé and they have three boys. Michael gives lead to the eldership team at Cornerstone and is employed as the paid pastor. Coming from South Africa, he loves a good BBQ and spending time outdoors. Even a simple time at the beach or a walk in a forest involves his small bbq. The reason why both him and Ess uprooted their family and came to Newcastle was to bring the good news of Jesus to as many people who would listen. Witnessing people being set free by the Gospel... there is nothing better! Solo Gracia

  • Joel & Lynette Marsden

I have been married to my lovely Lynette since 2006 and have 4 children: Joshua, Annabelle, Lottie and Caleb. These 5 inspire and challenge me and I care for all of them deeply. I work as a GP both in a local west end practice as well as in A and E and the walk in centres. Hard work but I genuinely feel privileged to have the job that I do. I love to spend time being with my family mostly doing what they love because that’s when they come alive! And with friends sharing good food - especially around a fire (there’s just something about fire that inspires deep conversation isn’t there?!) I also love to go for long walks by myself with my mini Bible and to play music and sing. Seeking to know God in every moment gets me up every morning. If I’ve missed God in a moment, then I’ve missed the point!

  • Mark & Nicole henderson

Mark has been married to Nicole since 2014 and have two children Liam and Eiren. Both Mark and Nicole work as physiotherapists. Mark works in private practice at a physiotherapy clinic in Gosforth and Nicole works in the NHS at Sunderland Royal Hospital. They love to keep the kids entertained by going to the beach and having fun in the park. Mark loves to preach the word of God knowing that it transforms lives by the power of the Holy Spirit. His Motivation for serving the church is to see people come to faith and deepen in the love and knowledge of God.

who is jesus?

The Man

Jesus is the Son of God, whose perfect example as a man shows us how to live our lives today.

Jesus was born in a small rural town roughly 2000 years ago and lived a relatively quiet life until the age of 30 when He began His public ministry. Over the next three years He preached the gospel, performed miracles and through this combination of words and works, He showed Himself as God on the Earth.

The Mission

Jesus came into the world on a mission; to make God known, to bring in God’s Kingdom and to accomplish God’s salvation. He did this through His life of perfect obedience to His Father, His sacrificial death in the place of sinful men and women, and His victorious resurrection from the dead. Jesus is, therefore, the saviour of all who put their faith in Him.

The Message

This is the good news for a broken world. Jesus has dealt with God’s anger at sin and reconciled us to Himself. He has cleansed us of our guilt and shame, opened the way to eternal life and He has given us His Holy Spirit to enable us to live for Him. This is the message that the church has been charged to proclaim through every generation until Jesus returns. In that day all things will be made new, to the praise of His glorious name.

The Bible says, “If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” (Romans 10:9)

Receiving God’s salvation is as easy as that because the hard work was done by Jesus himself. The gift is free to us but was costly to Jesus. To receive this gift, you could simply pray:

“Jesus, I believe you are the Son of God. I believe that you died for the wrong I’ve done against others and against you as the creator. I accept your love and grace for me and ask that you would be the Lord of my life.”

The next step is to let us know you've invited Jesus into your life. We would love to help you know Jesus more and walk alongside you at the start of this incredible adventure. So go ahead now and complete the GET CONNECTED card, and tick the box 'I prayed the prayer of salvation' and we'll be in touch as quick as a flash.
